NASA’s Perseverance Rover finally dug a piece of Mars


This was a lucky turn in early August, when Perseverance first tried to obtain a sample, but scientists discovered that there was actually nothing in the collection tube. Unfortunately, the coring mechanism grinds the fragile rock into a powder and then falls back to the ground near the borehole. Part of the reason for choosing Rochette is that the rocks there are considered harder and more likely to get trapped in the pipes.

Why is this a big problem: Collecting samples is one of the main objectives of the mission. Perseverance is equipped with 43 collection tubes, and NASA hopes to fill them with rock and soil samples from Mars so that they can be brought back to Earth one day. The 28-mile-long Jezero Crater is believed to be the site of the former river delta. If Mars was once habitable during the humid era billions of years ago, then this is one of the best places for fossil life to find home. Although the instruments equipped with Perseverance can tell us a lot about the existence of Jezero, the best opportunity to find biological characteristics and traces of microbial life is in laboratories on earth.
